How to make smart goals
What do you want to achieve in life? What do you want to achieve? Whether it’s becoming a world champion or finding your way to master the world, it will be an advantage to have some clear goals to work towards, we call these SMART goals.
Some people have clear images of what they want to achieve or become in one or more areas of their lives. They may have clear ideas about what they should do and work purposefully to make it happen. Others fail to see what they can do or what they should do to get there. Many people generally have little faith in themselves, and instead of setting smaller and more achievable goals to work towards, they don’t.
Setting smart goals is a lot about achieving what we want in life. It can be a good way to measure and be aware of whether we are on the right path where we want to go in life.
The starting point is to find out what drives me, what motives are important to me. It is an advantage to become aware of what I want to achieve, what and who gives me energy or what values and attitudes I want to fight for. The goals I set can make it easier to get where I want to go.
Goals and choices should be interrelated
If we are to achieve our goals, it is important that our efforts are aligned. There are many young people who set high goals in sports or education but do not know what it takes or are not prepared to put in that work. If what we choose to do does not correspond to the goals we set, it will often lead to negative experiences and lower belief that we can achieve it.
Another example is when many people make a New Year’s resolution to get in better shape and take care of their own health. They go about it with a lot of energy, preferably 3-4 times a week. The problem is that their efforts are not related to what they are willing to do over time. Most people therefore quit long before they have gotten the results they want.
In the Trigo app we have created routines that you can choose from depending on what you want to make of effort and what you want to achieve. The content is composed based on a defined purpose, what you can achieve, and applies for a defined period of time. Once you have set a routine, you will be measured by how much you are able to accomplish from the goals you have set.
Our recommendation is often to set goals that do not require more effort than you are able to put into it. It is better for many to succeed over time with a little than to fail because you have set the bar too high. Therefore, choose a routine that is realistic.
Goals can be adjusted
If, on the other hand, you set a goal that you find is a little too tough to maintain over time, it is acceptable to adjust that goal. It is not a defeat, simply a realization and acceptance, based on the experience you have gained; that is smart!
If you have set a routine in the Trigo app and for various reasons are unable to complete it, it may be a good idea to adjust the goal and choose a simpler routine.
Smart goals
A good method for setting goals is ‘SMART Goals’. A smart goal involves:
Specific and ambitious goals lead to better results. Without having a clear direction, you may not achieve what you want. Having clear goals for what you want to achieve will affect your motivation and therefore your efforts. The goal keeps you focused on what’s important.
In order to develop a good goal, it is important that the goal is specific. Feel free to break down a main goal into several sub-goals to make it even more specific.
It is important that it is measurable. If not, it can be challenging to evaluate whether you have reached your goal or not.
The goal should be ambitious and challenging so that you can have something to strive for, but it should still be realistic.
Finally, you should have a time limit that says when to evaluate whether you have achieved the goal or not.
